In the coming days, the vessel SW Empress will be acquiring four regional 2D seismic lines in international waters offshore Uruguay. The vessel recently completed a 3D seismic survey campaign in the Pelotas Basin in Brazil, close to the maritime boundary with Uruguay.
Uruguay has not yet ratified the United Nations decision on the extension of the continental shelf. Therefore, in this area located more than 200 nautical miles from the Uruguayan coast, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea applies, and the country does not yet hold rights over subsurface resources nor jurisdiction to grant environmental authorization for these projects.
