The Exploration and Production Department of ANCAP can perform the activities of hydrocarbon exploration by itself, as it is stablished in the Mining Code (Law 15.242). For this purpose, exploration areas are requested to the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) in which different activities are held (geological mapping, surface sampling, geophysical data acquisition, stratigraphic wells, among others).
